Analysis of body sway in patients with cerebellar lesions.

چکیده
By using the body sway test, we compared patients with the cerebellar type of spinocerebellar degeneration and with cerebellar hemisphere lesion with normal controls. In the X-direction, the Y-direction, the XY-direction, and the area, the patients with both spinocerebellar degeneration and with cerebellar hemisphere lesion swayed more than the normal controls either with eyes open or closed. In non-sequential 8-vector analysis the patients with spino-cerebellar degeneration swayed forward and backward, while the patients with cerebellar hemisphere lesion swayed right and left, especially with eyes closed. In the patients with the cerebellar type of spinocerebellar degeneration, the vermis atrophy was particularly noticeable. The patients with cerebellar lesions swayed with eyes open just as much as normal controls with eyes closed and did not sway greatly with eyes open. We concluded that the visual input plays an important role in the compensation for postural imbalance in the patients with cerebellar lesions and that the cerebellar hemisphere regulated the sway to right and left, while the vermis regulated the sway forward and backward in an upright standing posture.

Effect of vision, touch and stance on cerebellar vermian-related sway and tremor: a quantitative physiological and MRI study.
Postural balance is impaired in individuals with pathology of the anterior superior vermis of the cerebellum. Chronic alcoholism, with its known vermian pathology, provides a viable model for studying the relationship between cerebellar pathology and postural stability. Decades of separate study of recovering alcoholics and post-mortem neuroanatomical analysis have demonstrated vermian patholog...
متن کاملFunctional recovery of children and adolescents after cerebellar tumour resection.
This study examined whether lesions to the cerebellum obtained in early childhood are better compensated than lesions in middle childhood or adolescence. Since cerebellar lesions might affect motor as well a cognitive performance, posture, upper limb and working memory function were assessed in 22 patients after resection of a cerebellar tumour (age at surgery 1-17 years, minimum 3 years post-s...
متن کاملPostural behaviour responses to visual stimulation in patients with vestibular disorders.
Patients with different vestibular disorders exhibit changes in postural behaviour when they receive visual stimuli, reproducing environmental stimulation. Postural control was studied using an AMTI Accusway platform, measuring the confidential ellipse (CE) and sway velocity (SV). Postural responses were recorded according to the following stimulation paradigm: i) without specific stimuli; ii) ...
متن کاملPostural Ataxia in Cerebellar Downbeat Nystagmus: Its Relation to Visual, Proprioceptive and Vestibular Signals and Cerebellar Atrophy
BACKGROUND The cerebellum integrates proprioceptive, vestibular and visual signals for postural control. Cerebellar patients with downbeat nystagmus (DBN) complain of unsteadiness of stance and gait as well as blurred vision and oscillopsia. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to elucidate the differential role of visual input, gaze eccentricity, vestibular and proprioceptive input on the po...

By computerized static posturography with sway frequency analysis, subclinical effects of lead on postural balance was examined in 29 female workers (lead workers) employed at a glass factory for 3-17 (mean 7.9) years in Beijing, China, in relation to brainstem function assessed by brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP). Their blood lead concentrations ranged from 26 to 79 (mean 55.7) micro...
